David Tyson Smith, Founding Partner, State Legislator

David Tyson Smith is a distinguished figure known for his unwavering commitment to justice, his tireless advocacy for the rights of his clients, and his active engagement in the betterment of his community. With a remarkable track record in law and a deep-rooted dedication to social justice, David's life is a testament to his passion for seeking truth and fairness.

David's journey began in Columbia, Missouri, where he was raised. He is a proud alumnus of the University of Missouri-Columbia, where his involvement in the local community began. David recognized the importance of community support, and his commitment led him to assume the role of Vice President of the Board of Directors of Fun City Youth Academy, ensuring the continuation of after-school programs for the city's youth during a crucial transition.

During his college years, David spent summers working for the Plant Pathology Department at the University of Missouri, a job that took him to the southern reaches of the state. These experiences allowed him to witness the cultural disparities between Columbia and southern Missouri, fostering his awareness of societal injustice.

Motivated by a desire to address these injustices, David pursued a degree in Sociology with a minor in Political Science. His educational journey led him to Tulane Law School in New Orleans, where he thrived. In his first year of law school, his peers recognized his leadership abilities, electing him as Class President.

Tulane's diverse curriculum offered David a broad understanding of law and policy, including courses on Congressional Legislation and the Law of the Sea. His dedication to advocacy came to the fore during an intensive Trial Advocacy Course, where he realized the power of representing those whose voices often go unheard.

Upon completing his law degree, David initially planned to return to Missouri. However, he was recruited by a Plaintiff's Law Firm in downtown New Orleans, where he contributed to landmark litigation against Big Tobacco. His work revealed the immense influence of large corporations, spurring his commitment to fight for justice against corporate greed and power.

Nevertheless, David's roots beckoned him back to Columbia, Missouri, where he co-founded the law firm of Smith & Parnell LLC with Malia Parnell in 2005. The firm's focus on Criminal Defense, Personal Injury, and Family Law reflects David's dedication to addressing the pressing issues within the criminal justice system and beyond.

In 2006, David recognized the need for accountability and transparency in law enforcement. Alongside community leaders, he championed the creation of a Citizens Police Review Board in Columbia to address issues related to excessive use of force and misconduct.

In 2017, David's expertise and passion for social justice led to his appointment to the Missouri Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. His role in advising on civil rights issues in the state further underscores his commitment to positive change.

While maintaining a thriving law practice, David remains deeply involved in the Columbia community. He has served on the Board of Directors of Ragtag, received recognition as one of the "People You Should Know" by the Columbia Business Times, and was named one of the city's "20 under 40" in 2009. David is an active member of The Crossing Church, where he continues to find fulfillment in contributing to his community.

Above all, David remains a resounding advocate for social justice, whether through his legal practice or legislative responsibilities.
